From Fano to Viareggio

Dominator started building motor yachts in Fano, on Italy's Adriatic coast, in 2000. Through its first decade the yard built in fibreglass, and by 2008 its range had grown to 29 metres.

The 40M was the step beyond that, and she was built in a different material: aluminium. The hull came from Rossi Navi, a yard that began in metal fabrication and spent years working for other builders before launching superyachts under its own name. Enrico Gobbi's studio, Team for Design, drew her exterior [and interior], and Arrabito Naval Architects designed her semi-displacement form.

Built light, she carries two MTU 16V 2000 engines of 2,400 hp each, good for 24 knots and a cruising speed of 18. At that pace an 80-mile passage takes an afternoon rather than most of a day, and over a week that adds up to a good deal more coastline.

Most of the day is spent one deck up.

Upper aft deck with dining table and bar, looking forward into the skylounge through open glass doors

Open or closed

On that deck, glass doors separate the skylounge from the dining table and bar aft. Opened, they turn the two into one long space under the hardtop. Closed, the skylounge becomes a sheltered room with its own seating and table, out of the wind and the midday sun.

The Jacuzzi and entertainment system are up here too, so a long lunch can run into the evening without anyone going below.

A second living room

Where the skylounge opens onto the deck, the main saloon is a room in the conventional sense: deep sofas, a pair of armchairs, a low table and windows on both sides. At its forward end, a curved bar stands against a backlit stone wall.

With a lounge on each deck, a group can go separate ways for a few hours without anyone feeling squeezed out. Family can have the saloon while friends stay upstairs, or the other way round.

A private way into the sea

Owner's suite with a central bed beneath an oval ceiling detail and a desk under a wide window

On the port side of the owner's suite, a fold-down balcony opens the cabin to the water. At anchor, the owner can go from the suite straight into the sea without crossing the aft deck or passing through the guest areas.

The suite itself is arranged around a central bed beneath an oval ceiling detail, with a long desk set under a wide window. Everyone else uses the stern platform, which has steps down to the water and stairs on both sides up to the aft deck lounge.

Ten guests, five cabins

Alongside the owner's suite are four guest cabins: [a VIP double, a double and two twins].

Twin cabin with two single beds and portholes

Twin cabins

These are the flexible ones. They take children, friends travelling together or anyone who would rather not share a bed, so the same plan works for a family as well as for two or three couples.

Bathroom vanity, with the WC and bidet in a separate compartment

Bathrooms

Each cabin has its own bathroom. In this one, the WC and bidet sit behind a glass door in a compartment of their own, apart from the basin.

Equipped for a professional crew, kept for private use

Bridge console with chart displays, engine gauges and the autopilot below the forward windows

She is run by six crew, who have three cabins of their own. The bridge is fitted out for professional operation, with two independent electronic chart systems, twin radars, AIS, Navtex and a gyro autopilot. Below, two 55 kW generators and a 25 kW auxiliary set provide power, and an Idromar watermaker [rated at 500 litres per hour] keeps the 5,050-litre fresh water tanks topped up. She carries 28,900 litres of fuel.
